Wisdom teeth removal or extraction is performed at our Rockville dental office. Wisdom teeth are the rear molars that typically come in later than the other permanent teeth, usually in the later teen or early adult years. Since wisdom teeth come in later, they often will cause problems by crowded the preexisting teeth when the jaw isn’t large enough to accommodate them. The wisdom teeth may become impacted. This is when the teeth grow in at an angle and do not erupt from the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth may be quite uncomfortable and extraction of the teeth is typically recommended.


 

 

Some symptoms of impacted teeth include:

-Pain

-Swelling

-Jaw stiffness

-Infection or cysts near the teeth

Wisdom teeth removal may require general anesthetic. The teeth will be removed and the holes at the site of extraction closed with small stitches. After wisdom teeth removal it is important to take care in avoiding smoking, drinking through a straw, or eating food that requires a lot of chewing. Eat only soft foods such as soup, pudding, ice cream, and yogurt. This is necessary so that you do not displace the clot at the site of extraction. Displacing the clot can result in a condition called “dry sockets” which can be painful and increase the chance of post-extraction infection.

Continue to gently brush and rinse your mouth as normal, but avoid the area of extraction for the first few days. It may be necessary to temporarily take pain medication after extraction and you may experience some amount of swelling. Icing the area of extraction may also help with pain and swelling.
