Teeth Bonding

Teeth bonding is a cosmetic procedure performed in our Rockville office to:

-Repair fractured or chipped teeth

-Fix large gaps or spaces between the teeth

-Cover discolored parts of a tooth’s surface

-Change the shape of teeth

-As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings

-Protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede

During the teeth bonding procedure the dentist will use a shade guide to select a composite color that will most closely match the color of your teeth. The dentist will first clean the tooth and then use a sharp instrument to etch and place a mild acid on the tooth. A special adhesive material is then placed on the tooth. The bonding composite is a resin material that is then added on top of the tooth where it bonds with the adhesive. The composite may be added in layers to the tooth as needed by the dentist. The composite material is initially very soft and pliable, similar to putty, and can be shaped and molded by the dentist to take on the desired form on the tooth. Each layer of the bonding composite is cured or hardened using a special non-damaging high intensity light. After the last composite layer is hardened the composite is sculpted by the dentist to its final shape.

Teeth bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures. Some of the benefits of teeth bonding are:

-Very little, if any, of the original tooth needs to be removed. This can help retain the original structural integrity of the tooth.

-Very quick process that can be done in one appointment, typically less than an hour.

-Composite resin is very strong and durable and allows for normal use of the teeth

-Teeth bonding is typically inexpensive

Although teeth bonding is a great treatment alternative to other options like dental veneers and dental crowns, it is important to keep in mind that the bonding may need to be replaced in several years. Additionally, the bonding material may be more susceptible to stains and discoloration than tooth enamel. It is important to continue to practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. You will also want to schedule regular appointments at our Rockville dental office for exams and professional teeth cleaning.
