Gum Disease Periodontal Treatment & Prevention.- Scaling and Root Planning in Rockville
Deep Root Planing and Scaling
Root scaling and planing are used to treat gum/periodontal disease These procedures can be easily performed at our Rockville dental office. Scaling and root planning remove the plaque and bacteria found below the gum lines. These procedures are often referred to as “deep cleaning” procedures.
Special instruments including manual and ultrasonic scalers are used to remove both tartar and plaque attached to the tooth surface. The ultrasonic scaling instruments function first to remove larger pieces of plaque and calculus from the teeth. Manual scalers are then used to remove any smaller pieces of remaining plaque and calculus.
Scaling particularly targets places below the gum line, along the root. Plaque tends to particularly adhere to rough surfaces. During root planing the root surface is smoothed so that plaque is less likely to stick to the surface. Root planing removes any remaining calculus and smooths rough areas of the root surface.
In order to prevent periodontal gum disease from recurring after scaling and root planning it is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly at home. Ongoing regular exams and professional teeth cleaning are also a part of preventing periodontal disease from recurring. Call today to schedule an appointment at our Rockville office.
