Porcelain Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are frequently seen on television makeover shows. Veneers are extremely thin laminates or shells of tooth-colored material that are cemented to the front surface of the teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance. They are often made of porcelain or ceramic and are used to produce a bright white smile with evenly spaced teeth. Dental veneers are a cosmetic dentistry procedure performed in our Rockville dental office.
Veneers can address many cosmetic dental concerns including:
-Discoloration and significant wear to enamel
-Appearance of uneven teeth from chips or fractures
-Unusual teeth spacing and large gaps
-Crooked teeth
The procedure for dental veneers typically takes at least two visits to our Rockville office. At the initial visit, the dentist will begin to prepare the existing teeth for the addition of the veneers by removing a small amount of tooth enamel. The amount of enamel removed is very small and is approximately the same as the thickness of the veneer to be fitted, so that the tooth remains the same size. Many patients do not find this part of the procedure uncomfortable, but if necessary, a local anesthetic can be used to make sure the patient is comfortable. Also at this visit, the dentist will make a model of the prepared teeth which will be sent to an external lab to create the custom veneers. Temporary veneers may be used while the permanent veneers are being made. During a second visit, the custom veneers will be placed and bonded to the existing teeth. Bonding of the veneer is done with a special adhesive, which holds it firmly on the tooth.
Dental veneers are quite strong however care should be taken to avoiding staining and discoloration. The main culprits for staining are tobacco, tea, and coffee. You may also want to exercise caution in eating very hard foods in order to decrease the possibility of cracking the veneers. Good oral hygiene should be practiced in caring for your veneers. This includes regular brushing and flossing as well as regular exams and professional teeth cleaning at our Rockville dental office.
Dental veneers serve an aesthetic purpose by resulting in beautifully shaped and aligned teeth and a bright white smile. They also can serve a structural and functional purpose by protecting damaged teeth. Call today to schedule a consultation at our Rockville office.
Possible alternatives for dental veneers: dental implants, ceramic crowns, dental bridges, teeth bonding.
