Gum Disease/Periodontitis.

There are two stages of gum disease:

-Gingivitis

-Periodontitis

When gingivitis is present, the gums will appear red and swollen and bleed easily during normal brushing and flossing. Gingivitis is very common, but can be reversed with proper oral hygiene. The cause of gingivitis is bacterial plaque. There are small gaps that can form between the gum line and teeth. Bacterial plaque accumulates in these gaps and cause inflammation and infection. Over time the infection will cause the pockets to become deeper and deeper and may lead to loss of tissue and bone surrounding the teeth. Left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis.

Periodontitis is advanced gum disease. Depending on the level of severity of gum disease, the patient will experience different degrees of breakdown in the tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Very advanced periodontitis may require surgery and result in tooth loss.

A number of lifestyle and health factors may contribute to the occurrence of periodontal disease. These include:

-Tobacco use

-Heredity

-Drugs

-Diabetes

-Hormonal changes

-Nutritional deficiencies
