Dentures

Dentures are a cosmetic dentistry option available at our Rockville dental office for replacing teeth missing from tooth decay, facial injury, or gum disease. It is necessary to replace the teeth in order to have normal chewing and speech function as well as a normal smile and aesthetic appearance through support for surrounding facial tissue. Dentures are created from molds or impressions of the patient’s mouth and are thus custom fitted. Care is taken in choosing the exact color and shape of the teeth to most closely mimic that of the patient’s natural teeth. The teeth in dentures are typically made of porcelain or plastic.

There are two types of dentures:

Full dentures - Used when all of the teeth on the upper or lower jaw are missing. Full dentures are molded to fit the gums securely and are colored to match the color of the natural gum and teeth. Some patients find full dentures take a longer period of adjustment as it is only suction holding the full denture in place rather than any natural teeth. It may be necessary to adapt chewing and speech to deal with the new denture. Thus, full dentures are seen as a last resort in comparison to partial dentures.

Partial dentures – Used when some, but not all of the teeth are missing and the remaining teeth and jaw areas are able to continue functioning properly and provide support for the denture. Partial dentures are often used when the teeth around the missing tooth/teeth are not healthy enough to support the use of a dental bridge. Partial dentures are often easier for a patient to adjust to and use without problem when compared to full dentures.

It is important to continue to maintain good oral hygiene with either full or partial dentures. This includes:

-Removing food that can cause stains by brushing at least daily

-Using recommended cleaning solutions and avoiding harsh cleansers that may damage the denture

-Rinsing the mouth with warm water or a denture cleaning solution when dentures are removed

-Visiting our Rockville office for regular exams to check the fit of the denture and assess for any other problems such as gum disease
