Dental Implants

Tooth loss can be difficult to deal with both structurally and cosmetically. Tooth loss can result in problems with tooth and jaw alignment and abnormal spacing/movement of adjacent teeth. There may be issues with self-consciousness and changes to the smile, facial features, and speech. Anyone with dentures knows how important the teeth, gums and jawbone are as support for the lips, cheeks and lower face. Loss of these important structures gives an appearance of premature aging and for many people causes self-consciousness. Implant-supported teeth and dentures can slow down this aging process and help improve self esteem. Although functional benefits are the most obvious, cosmetic and emotional benefits are for many people as important as or more important than, the functional benefits.

Dental implants are a restorative option offered at our Rockville dental office for the treatment of missing teeth due to:

-Advanced tooth decay

-Failure of a root canal procedure

-Advanced periodontitis

-Injury or trauma to the mouth

-Excessive wear and tear

Dental implant surgery is a multi-step process that may involve a bone grafting procedure prior to the placement of titanium rods into the jaw bone. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins to shrink away or resorb and becomes increasingly brittle. Bone grafting replaces some of the bone that has resorbed and provides a more solid foundation for the placement of the titanium rods. These rods function the way a natural root structure would for a normal tooth. The titanium is very strong and durable which allows for normal chewing and jaw function. Both single and multiple teeth can be replaced by dental implants. Dental implants are considered to be much more durable than other teeth replacement options such as dentures and bridges. Mini dental implants may be used for small teeth and incisors. Also, a mini dental implant may best serve patients who require stabilization of lower jaw dentures, pre-molar teeth, or a missing tooth that was located in a narrow area.

With the exception of children, because their teeth and jaw are still growing, most patients that experience tooth loss may be candidates for dental implant treatment. If you already have had treatment for tooth loss such as removable bridges or dentures, you can still have dental implant surgery to replace these less permanent treatment options. The dental implant can secure the bridge or dentures in place making it more stable and comfortable. If you have lost a tooth, dental implants are an option for you. Call our Rockville office today for an appointment to be evaluated for dental implants.

Although they tend to be a more expensive treatment option, dental implants are among the most successful procedures in dentistry. Dental implants are very strong because of the method of placement. There is no problem with slippage, which means that you can eat and speak with comfort and confidence. Although dental implants replace natural teeth with synthetic material, it is still necessary to practice good oral hygiene to protect the surrounding teeth and gums from tooth decay and gum disease. Dental implants may break or become infected (like natural teeth) and crowns may become loose. Regular brushing and flossing will help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Scheduling regular exams and professional teeth cleaning at our Rockville office will also keep your mouth and smile healthy.

Dental Implants placing process

stage 1 of placing dental implant

Implants are surgically placed into the jawbone in approximately the same places where the natural teeth once were.

stage 2 drilling hole for dental implant

The dentist placing the implant creates a hole into the jawbone that will accept the implant.  The hole approximates the shape of the previous tooth and the new artificial implant to be placed.

stage 3 of placing dental implant- placing titanium base

The implant is then inserted into the hole and the gum tissue is closed over the implant to heal.  The implant must heal from three to seven months depending on the situation.

stage 4- healing of gum in process of placing dental implant

The bone and gums mature around the implant, and the implant becomes securely fastened to the bone.  This healing process is called osseointegration.

final stage in process of placing dental implant

After the bone has healed, the dentist removes a small portion of the gum tissue covering over the implant and the implant is exposed.  The artificial tooth or reconstruction is then attached to the implant.
