Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering or “cap” that is placed over a portion of a tooth that has been damaged or broken by injury or tooth decay. It may be placed for cosmetic reasons or may be necessary after a root canal procedure. There are many different types of materials that may be used to create a dental crown such as, porcelain, gold, resin or other composite. A porcelain crown is often considered to have the most natural aesthetic appearance, although it is not necessarily the strongest material available.
A dental crown may be required when:
- A tooth has had extensive decay and a filling by itself will not create a strong tooth structure
- A tooth has been badly discolored
- A tooth has been fractured
- A root canal procedure has been performed
- A dental bridge must be place in order for the bridge to be placed the two adjacent teeth must have dental crowns
The dental crown procedure usually requires two visits to our Rockville office over the course of two to three weeks. During the first office visit, the tooth will be assessed and prepared for an impression or mold. The dentist may file or shape the tooth structure as needed for a secure fit for the dental crown. Once the tooth is shaped, an impression or mold will be made. This mold will be sent to an external lab where it will be used to create a custom shaped dental crown. In the meantime, the dentist will likely put a temporary dental crown in place which will fit over the tooth and protect it while the permanent crown is being made. During the second office visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the tooth again examined. The permanent dental crown will be placed and permanently cemented into place. Dental crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your teeth and smile.
Dental crowns require the same good oral hygiene and proper maintenance as natural teeth. This includes daily brushing and flossing to decrease the potential for build up of plaque and tartar and the development of tooth decay. Although the dental crown is made of a synthetic material, it is still possible to get decay and cavities in the area surrounding a crown. It is also necessary to have regular exams and professional teeth cleaning at our Rockville office to make sure that the teeth are healthy. Although the crown is permanent, it needs proper care to last a lifetime. Call today for an appointment at our Rockville dental office.
