Replacing missing teeth with dental bridge in Rockville

Dental Bridges

Tooth loss can occur with caries or tooth decay, fracture, bone loss, or infection. The tooth may fall out or need to be professionally extracted by a dentist. The loss of a tooth is both a cosmetic and structural/functional concern. Structure/function issues may include:

-Shifting or realigning of surrounding teeth

-Changes in jaw alignment and bite

-Pain or discomfort related to shifts in alignment

-Decreased ability to chew and consume food

If tooth loss is not treated, the shifting in surrounding teeth may require dental braces to realign the teeth.

Replacing missing teeth can be accomplished by bridges, partial dentures, or dental implants. If multiple teeth are lost, dentures or dental implants are likely the best treatment option. If only one tooth is missing, a dental bridge can be used to replace the missing tooth.

The procedure for a dental bridge typically requires two visits to our Rockville office. Three dental crowns are made together so that crowns on teeth adjacent to the missing tooth support the missing middle tooth. During the first appointment the adjacent teeth are prepared for the dental crowns. They may be shaped by the dentist so that they are ready to have the crowns placed. Molds or impressions of the teeth are then taken. A temporary bridge will be placed while the molds are sent to an outside laboratory for permanent crowns to be made. During the second appointment, the permanent bridge is placed and the dentist will check that it is placed in a manner that allows for proper functioning and aesthetics. Once it is properly placed, the bridge may be cemented into place.

There are two types of fixed dental bridges:

-Conventional bridge has replacement teeth attached to crowns on adjacent teeth.

-Maryland bridge has replacement teeth attached to the back of natural teeth with a metal strip. A Maryland bridge is a good option if the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth are healthy and in good condition.

Dentists in our Rockville office can examine your teeth and assist you in determining the best type of dental bridge and treatment plan for your needs. Call today to schedule an appointment.
