Bone Grafting

When teeth are missing, the bone in the surrounding area may shrink over time. Additionally, bone loss may occur from gum/periodontal disease, maxillofacial/facial trauma, or ill fitting dentures. Bone grafting is a procedure performed at our Rockville office which replaces or augments places where there has been bone loss. Bone grafting, aims both to replace missing bone and to stimulate new bone growth. A bone graft is often used in dentistry to augment bone in the jaw and permit the placement of a dental implant. The jaw bone beneath dental implants provides support and must be strong enough to have the implant integrate properly into the mouth.

Bone grafting may use an artificial, synthetic, or natural bone substitute.

There are three main types of bone grafting:

- Autogenous – this is bone that is removed from one part of the patient and moved to another area

- Allograft – this type of grafting may be synthetic bone or bone that comes from a bone bank

- Xenograft – this type of grafting comes from another animal source, typically bovine or cow bone

Autogenous bone grafting typically has the most predictable results. This is often considered the best type of bone graft because the bone is living tissue and the source is the patient themselves. Whenever we can use the patients own bone for repairs or additions, we will get the best results.

The advantage of Allografts and Xenografts is that neither requires a second surgical site as does the autogenous bone. There also are larger amounts of bone available for Allografts and Xenografts.
