In this procedure, the root tip is removed and replaced with a small filling. This treatment may be necessary to ensure that the root canal therapy is effective.
Apicoectomy is a procedure performed at our Rockville office and often is done following a root canal. During an apicoectomy the apex of the root of the tooth is removed. At times there may be is continued inflammation and infection in the area around the root after a root canal procedure. The patient may have continued pain and infection in the tooth area. The dentist can assess this part of the tooth by folding back the part of the gum near the tooth. If infection is present, the tip of the root may be removed and the area filled. A small suture may be necessary in the gum and the patient may take antibiotics as an additional treatment for the infection.
